Tinley Park Do-Rite Donuts Sued Over Covid-19 Surcharge: Report

TINLEY PARK, IL — The Tinley Park location of Do-Rite Donuts and Chicken is one of several restaurants named in a lawsuit filed by a man who claims the doughnut shop put a Covid-19 surcharge on his bill without notifying him.

The plaintiff in the lawsuit—Cook County resident and Do-Rite Tinley Park customer James Maher—said he was not told about that 3 percent surcharge prior to his purchase, reports Crain's Chicago Business.

The lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court alleges that by adding the surcharge after purchase, the Chicago-based Lettuce Entertain You restaurants like Do-Rite committed fraud and deceived its customers.

Maher reportedly argued that menu prices should be raised to cover extra costs, instead of adding a surcharge, as reported by ABC-7 Chicago.

After re-emerging from abrupt closures and dining restrictions during the pandemic, many restaurants enacted surcharges or extra fees to help cover the financial gaps, Crain's reported. The Illinois Attorney General pro the Illinois Attorney General have said reasonable price increases are permitted, with proper disclosure to customers, ABC-7 reports.
