Tinley Park Water Park to Pool Swimmers for 'Largest Swimming Lesson Ever'

White Water Canyon will be open to anyone who wants to participate in the June 18 feat to break a world record.

The Tinley Park-Park District’s White Water Canyon Water Park will join other member aquatic centers from the World Waterpark Association (WWA) in the 2015 World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL). The 2015 event will mark Team WLSL’s sixth Guinness World Record attempt for the largest swimming lesson ever conducted. The global record attempt will take place on Thursday, June 18 at 10 a.m. in whatever time zone the host location facility is located.

White Water Canyon will open its gates to anyone wishing to participate in this free event, which will run from 1 to 10:30 a.m. at the water park. Registration will begin at 9:15 a.m. at the water park front gate and the WLSL event will start promptly at 10 a.m.

According to a press release from WWA, Team WLSL set its fifth Guinness World Record on June 20, 2014 with 36,546 participants representing 22 different countries. The 2014 WLSL event generated more than 50 million media impressions, spreading the event’s important message to hundreds of thousands of families.

Tragically, drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children ages 1-5, and the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under 14. Research shows that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children age 1-to-4, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training.
