Together We Cope in 'Back to School' mode

How to help local children in need start school on the right foot. Donate today to make a difference in your community!

Together We Cope is in ‘Back to School’ mode

School may be out for the summer, but Together We Cope is gearing up now to make sure local children in need can head back to school fully equipped in August.

Last year, the nonprofit agency equipped 1,500 area students with new backpacks and school supplies. This year, TWC plans to reach even more.

According to Tina Kessens, who coordinates client programs for TWC, this year marks the highest number of children participating in the Back to School drive. “Every child deserves a perfect start to the school year,” she said. “We will not be able to help all of these children without assistance from the greater south suburban community.”
In order to assist them, TWC is seeking donations of funds to cover the cost of pre-packed boxes of school supplies, ordered by grade level, as well as backpacks. A $20 gift covers the expense for one child.

This year, the agency is also inviting people who are willing to do the shopping themselves to donate backpacks, particularly smaller sizes for younger children.

“We are very grateful for the financial support we have received for this program from so many generous people in the region,” Kessens said.

Client families also will receive free haircut coupons from local salons and gift certificates for clothing from Nu2u, the agency’s resale shop. “A good education is the key to success,” said TWC’s Executive Director Kathryn Straniero. “That’s why we think it’s so important to work with families to support their child’s school experience.”
Donated backpacks can be dropped off at 17010 S. Oak Park Ave. in Tinley Park from 9 am to 3 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 2-7 pm on Thursdays.
