From 11 a.m.-3 p.m., on Saturday, September 13, 2014, Body Fusion Pilates, located in Dunston Plaza at 2847 Dundee Road, in Northbrook is holding an Open House. There will be demonstrations, free massages and food available for those who stop in, as well as discounted introductory offers.
Body Fusion Pilates is an equipment-based studio offering private and semi-private Pilates sessions, as well as private GYROTONIC® lessons. It is the only studio north of Evanston that offers Gyrotonic training. The Gyrotonic System has its roots in yoga, Tai Chi and dance, and is designed to meet the needs of people of all ages. Although Gyrotonic exercises stretch and strengthen your body, as well as improve coordination, flexibility and balance, the main goal with this holistic approach to movement is really to teach your body to move in a healthy and effective way. Although Gyrotonic is still unknown to the vast majority of people, Ms. Fonseca says she has seen a significant growth in its popularity in even the past few years since she has been back in the Chicago area.
Ms. Fonseca grew up in Northbrook and was educated at Shabonee Middle School, and Wood Oaks Junior High School before graduating from Glenbrook North High School after her junior year. She moved to New York when she was 16, to dance with the Joffrey Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre, but due to injuries, she was forced to stop dancing.

“I started doing Pilates as part of the physical therapy rehabilitation program for my ankle injury,” says Ms. Fonseca. “This injury led to a career as a Pilates instructor, and I now have been teaching Pilates for more than 11 years.” Ms. Fonseca says she likes to tailor her sessions to meet the needs of each individual client. “Everyone comes in with their own injuries, experiences and misconceptions,” she says. “The beauty of working one on one with people is that you can wipe the slate clean and start with a blank canvas. A lot of the time what people think are their strengths are actually their weaknesses and vice versa.”
Ms. Fonseca first started teaching Pilates in Chicago, Deerfield and Highland Park before eventually moving back to New York. There, she continued to teach at two of the most prestigious Pilates studios in Manhattan over the next four years. It was at one of these studios where she first became aware of the Gyrotonic method and decided to pursue the extensive training required to become a certified instructor.

“It was amazing to see how many people from different walks of life were benefitting from Gyrotonic lessons,” she says. “I worked with models and dancers, golfers struggling with their game and people suffering with chronic back pain. Gyrotonic truly have something to offer everyone, and I am pleased to be able to give people in this area the opportunity to experience it for themselves.”
