$42K Penalty Proposed for La Grange Park Construction Company

The company failed to provide cave-in protection for a worker in a 6-foot trench, according to an OSHA investigation.

A La Grange Park construction company was cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for failing to provide cave-in protection.

Suburban General Construction Inc. exposed a worker to trench cave-in hazards while repairing water lines in a 6-foot trench on a River Forest work site, according to a U.S. Department of Labor news brief.

OSHA initiated an inspection Jan 16 after a witness saw the trenching hazards.

The proposed penalty is $42,350, the news brief stated.

“Unprotected trenches can become gravesites in seconds,” said Angeline Loftus, OSHA’s area director at is Chicago North Office in Des Plaines, in a statement. ”Violations of OSHA’s trench protection standards remain a pervasive condition in this industry and it needs to stop. No worker’s life should be at risk for a job.”
