All Saints Church will hold a special celebratory service on Wednesday, October 29th at 7pm to commemorate its 120th anniversary and the arrival of its seventh rector, The Rev. Kate Spelman. The church was founded on All Saints Day in 1894; Spelman joined as full-time pastor in April of 2014.
The Right Rev. Jeffrey Lee, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago will preside, with the Rev. Erika Takcas, Associate Rector of St. Mark’s Church, Philadelphia preaching. Clergy from around the diocese of Chicago and Western Springs Ministerium will participate. All are welcome to the celebration and a dessert reception to follow.

All Saints has called the relationship with its new pastor “A match made in heaven.” “It’s intended to be light-hearted and a little tongue-in-cheek,” said the Rev. Spelman, “but it expresses a deep truth about how excited we all are to be beginning All Saints’ 120th year together. When I was searching for my position I kept asking my friends how I would know when the right job came along. They just kept saying, ‘You’ll know.’ That sounded really abstract to me until I found All Saints and fell in love with the place, it s people, and the town of Western Springs, which is a wonderful spot to be in ministry. We’ve designed the service with that in mind, and included pastors from other local churches and around the diocese. Having it on a Wednesday night means, we hope, that lots of folks will be able to join us, whether they go to our church, another church, or no church at all.”
Spelman came to Western Springs from historic Christ Church in Philadelphia, where she served as Assistant Rector after completing her Masters of Divinity at Yale University. She joined a lively congregation with growing ministries in adult Christian formation and outreach. “This is also a congregation that knows how to have fun, and loves to eat together,” Spelman said, “so you can expect the reception to be great as well!”
