WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – Lyons Township High School is seeking a permit to continue with South Campus work that Western Springs ordered it to stop in the spring.
On Thursday, the village's Plan Commission is expected to hear the school's request for a shot put and discus area.
In late March, the village, alerted by neighbors, informed the high school that it needed to get a permit for the project.
But the school apparently continued. Two and a half weeks later, the village issued the stop-work order.
A few days later, neighbors spoke to the school board, objecting to the project and referring to the stop-work order.
Documents indicate that this may have been the first time that the board had heard about the problem.
In its application, the school is requesting permission to build discus and shot put areas with bleachers.
The school also wants to relocate the proposed softball field batting cages from the left side of the newly constructed softball field to the right.
The project would also include pitching bullpens along both the left and right sides of the field.
The staff's recommendations concern the neighbors in the 4700 block of Howard Avenue, who are nearest the proposed project.
The staff suggests the school conduct a noise analysis to determine whether the spectators' bleachers would comply with local noise control rules.
The employees also recommend a landscape plan to reduce the "visual and noise" impacts to the neighbors' houses.
The Plan Commission meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Village Hall.
