After Patty Segura had a couple of bad experiences at nail salons, she decided to open her own. Fortunately for her, she knew 13-year industry veteran Tomy Sanchez, who came from Mario Tricoci Salon on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
“I went to a nail salon one day and had horrible service,” she said. “I went to another and it was not clean. So I called Tomy and asked if we could make something happen.”
Segura and Sanchez are childhood friends from Cicero, and Sanchez even baptized Segura's son. Now they've teamed up to open Broken Nail Boutique, located on the second floor of 108 W. Burlington Ave. in La Grange.
The new salon officially opened Thursday, Aug. 22, and I stopped in for my first pedicure. Segura completely redid the space, putting in new floors, knocking down walls and building a comfortable space. While getting a pedicure, I enjoyed the complimentary coffee (there's also tea and flavored water) and a back massage from the seats.
Cleanliness and customer service are what Segura stresses most. Instead of jet tubs, Broken Nail has tubs that are easier to clean, and they use autoclave cleaning to disinfect the tools.
"That file used on you will be the only time that file is used," Segura told me after my pedicure. "I've been to places before where you can tell they've been used before."
Segura and her husband, Allan, will oversee the business side of Broken Nail, while Sanchez will use her expertise to train staff and manage products. Broken Nail also has its own product line only available at the La Grange salon.
The salon is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Learn more at the Broken Nail website.
