The 2014 AAUW Scholarship recipients were treated to words of wisdom and experience from Dr. Anjali Gera at the awards luncheon on May 21 at the Ruth Lake Country Club. Awarded an AAUW grant, she was thrilled to have been able to apply those funds to her ongoing education expenses.
Dr. Gera, a neurologist, is a recent graduate of the U of I College of Medicine who has earned honors that include Bamberger Scholar, Illinois General Assembly Scholar, Nesbitt Medical Student Foundation Scholar, Gates Millennium Scholar, KY Governor’s Scholar and a Distinguished Service Award. Alongside her years of dedicated study, Dr. Gera has worked to improve the lives of underprivileged children in Illinois, disabled citizens across the state, and at-risk citizens in rural Honduran and South Asian communities.
“There are three keys to success,” Dr. Gera reminded her listeners—AAUW members, the Scholarship winners, and guests. “Take care to be the best person you can be, be persistent in your goals and dreams, and have faith in yourself.” Dedicated to education and equity for women and girls, AAUW and the Hinsdale/Oak Brook area members applaud Dr. Gera’s accomplishments and are proud to have been a part of her educational and professional journey.
