It’s the week of the class Valentine Party. One thing I like about Western Springs' schools is that they are a little old school about some things. Friends in other communities tell me their schools have few or no celebrations at all. I think that’s regrettable.
Western Springs' schools still seem to appreciate a good party. At Halloween in addition to a party, the elementary schools have a costume parade, and the teachers and staff are great sports to dress in costume themselves.
School time is valuable but I think there is merit in stepping out of the usual school schedule. Yes, the kids can get silly. Isn’t that what being a kid is all about?

Celebrations give a carrot and an event for the kids to look forward to. I think it gives them a chance to break out of their usual social groups and school roles.
A key part of making those events happen is the parent volunteers (and in many other activities). In previous jobs I’ve worked with many different parents. Something that makes our community unique is a high level of commitment and involvement by Western Springs' parents.

It’s not the case for every class, but parents seem to view volunteering as an important part of school life. For celebrations, they take time to consider what types of activities the kids would enjoy.
There have been several times I offered to volunteer and was told there was already enough for the activity. It’s different from experiences I’ve had other places I have lived. Short of offering a cash incentive, I just couldn’t get parents to help.
The celebrations give a chance for parents to get to know other kids in the class and for the teacher to get to know the parents. I value the teachers and staff taking the time, being good sports about the mess and participating in the festivities.
