Nazareth Academy congratulates U.S. History Honors students whose History Fair projects have advanced from Regional competition to the Metro City Finals, and now on to the State Finals at the Illinois History Expo on May 7 in Springfield. In all, three documentaries and four exhibits have advanced to this stage in the national competition.

Juniors in Mrs. Hawkins’ U.S. History Honors classes were charged with creating research papers, documentaries or exhibits focused on one subject in Chicago or Chicago suburban History. During the course of this project, students spend approximately 5 months working individually or in groups to create historical research projects. Students learn how to find and use primary and secondary sources as evidence in their projects. In the process, they extend the walls of the classroom into the community to find sources for their research. In studying the history of their own community, students learn how decisions are made in the social, cultural, economic, and political realms that affect their lives.

Nazareth Academy students have a strong tradition of excellence in the annual History Fair. In both 2013 and 2014, Nazareth student projects advanced all the way to National History Day, held in Maryland each summer.

The advancing projects range from documentaries about Jack Benny and Bob Fosse to exhibits about pioneering doctors to the foundations of modern advertising.
