Have The Itch To Act?

If you have always wanted to act on stage, consider this an invitation to join the acting company. Only twice a year the Theatre of Western Springs (TWS) puts out the welcome mat for men and women aged 18 and older who wish to act on stage or work backstage at the Theatre of Western Springs.

A 10-session workshop titled Studio takes place from Tuesday, April 27 through Sunday, May 7, 2023, at the theatre, 4384 Hampton Ave., Western Springs. Taught by TWS Executive Artistic Director Eddie Sugarman, Studio is an introduction to the Theatre of Western Springs as well as an acting workshop.

“We will use enjoyable exercises and improvisation to work on basic acting concepts and then apply them to monologues,” Sugarman said. “We will also let participants know how things work at TWS in terms of volunteering and casting.”

All levels of experience are welcome. Participants who are not interested in acting will be introduced to several technical areas of the theatre. Non-actors will have a different schedule which will be worked out with the instructor.

The first session is from 7:15 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, and the final session is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2023. The TWS office can supply dates in between.

Few people realize that there are no auditions at TWS. Plays are selected and cast by a nine-member committee whose members endeavor to cast and nurture the actor by assigning him or her ever more challenging and imaginative roles. This unique and successful method of casting has been in place for decades.

Studio costs $75. This fee is applied to a subscription for TWS’s 95th season, 2023 – 2024. Once a person has graduated from Studio and has purchased a subscription, he or she is eligible for casting.
