LT to host Model UN conference

February 28th at South Campus

Members of the Lyons Township High School Model United Nations Club are anxious to host their fifth conference (LYMUN, formerly known as SILTMUN I-IV) on February 28th, with guest speaker Honorable Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, the Consul General of Pakistan, Chicago. In total, more than 600 delegates and 50 LT student secretariat members from 28 area high schools will participate in the conference scheduled from 8am-5:30pm at South Campus, 4900 S. Willow Springs Rd., Western Springs.

Students will serve on 15 committees and discuss and debate a variety of topics. LT will provide live feed simulations to generate realistic and intense committee sessions, including crises between India and Pakistan. LTTV will air amazing crisis videos and live opening and closing ceremonies. Topics of debate include an International Bill of Rights for Women, Stimulation of the Euro, Fighting Islamic Extremist Terrorism, Ebola and Containment Policies, the Future of Nuclear Power in Military Weaponry, and International Protocol on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

For the past several years, LT hosted this conference with St. Ignatius High School but is now venturing out on its own. This one-day conference is designed to educate and prepare novice and veteran delegates. Participating schools include Stevenson, Leyden, Francis W Parker, Maine South, Marion Catholic, Nazareth Academy, Whitney Young, William Fremd, York and of course LTHS and St. Ignatius.

The opening ceremonies begin at 7am, with committee sessions running for the remainder of the day. More than 30 LT delegates and as many LT staff members will be participating in next Saturday’s conference.

The Model United Nations experience brings to life the problems that face the real world and allows participants to represent their assigned country’s position and work toward resolving issues of global importance.

Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the U.N. General Assembly. A Model U.N. delegate is a student who assumes the role of an ambassador to the United Nations. While awards are given out for the best speakers of each committee, there are no points as in debate.

LT’s Model UN Club meets on Wednesdays after school in Room D103 at South Campus, 4900 S. Willow Springs Rd., Western Springs. For additional information, contact advisor John Cronfel at jcronfel@lths.net or the LTMUN website at www.lths.net/MUN
