Three Lyons Township High School student-artists earned silver medals in the 2015 National Scholastic Art Awards. Seniors Madeline Bernstein, of LaGrange, medaled in mixed media, Molly Miklosz, of Western Springs, earned silver for ceramics and glass, and Claudia Gregory, of Indian Head Park, won a silver medal in photography.
In total, two dozen pieces of art work created by 16 LT artists advanced to the Scholastic Art Awards national competition in New York. LT’s winning entries were among more than 300,000 works of art and writing submitted from students across the country. Just about 6%, or 17,000, earned regional Gold Keys and qualified for national medals. Of those, just 2,200, or 0.7% received National Gold and Silver Medals.
Miklosz described her winning glass house as follows: “I created my stained glass house to inspire a sense of time passing along with the memories made with my family. I drew etchings of my family growing up through the years on different panels of glass that I specifically chose and soldered together. The drawings, arranged in chronological order, depict various moments during my family’s past, including memories such as carving pumpkins, going to the beach, or playing at the park. The sculpture really brings about that sense of time passing and of family memories that are so important to me, illuminated from within.”
