WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Memorial Day is America's day to honor servicemen and women who have given their lives for their country. For many, it's also the unofficial start of summer — but since it's a national holiday, it's important to keep in mind that schools and government offices will be closed on that day.

Here's a roundup of what's closed and what will be open on Monday, May 28, and a glance at some local Memorial Day events.

  • Thomas Ford Memorial Library (opens at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday)
  • Banks/financial institutions
  • Post offices
  • Republic Services: Service will run one day behind throughout the holiday week, beginning with services scheduled for the holiday.

Open
Most businesses will be open, but it's not a bad idea to call ahead before heading out to a restaurant or shop. Some businesses will be offering discounts to veterans or active-duty military, so if you've served, bring your military ID with you.
