Adult Programs:
The Invisible Black Pilots of WWII - Thursday, November 6, 7:00pm
Liaison pilots were the daredevil pilots of the war. They flew tiny, fabric-covered Piper Cub airplanes right into enemy fire for the purpose of spotting the enemy’s location and directing Allied artillery fire onto their heads. Liaison planes had no armaments, but the pilots had such guts and flying expertise that battlefield commanders were soon relying on them to drop food and medical supplies to Allied soldiers pinned down at the front or rescue fighter pilots downed behind enemy lines. Over 2,300 white pilots and around 55 black ones risked their lives this way. Together, they are credited with saving tens of thousands of American and Allied lives. Karyn Taylor’s father was one of those black pilots, most of whom were Tuskegee Airmen, and she tells her father’s story tonight. Please register. (5 min/ 50 max)
