Pedestrian Accident on BNSF Line Causing 90-Minute Metra Delays
Two pedestrians hit on BNSF line by inbound Metra train on Thursday afternoon, stranding thousands of downtown commuters, Metra says.

An inbound LaGrange Metra train reportedly struck two pedestrians around 4:58 p.m. Thursday on the BNSF line, a Metra official said.
The train was running express from LaGrange toward downtown Chicago where it hit two people about a mile west of the Western Avenue station, causing delays of up to 90 minutes for downtown commuters.
Metra confirmed two fatalities -- a male and a female -- who were struck near an elevated section of the track that is not accessible to pedestrians between Western and Cicero Avenues within the Chicago city limits.

As of 6:21 p.m. Thursday, both bodies were still on the tracks, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.
“At this point in time we’re advising that commuters consider alternate transportation,” Reile said. “We’re monitoring the situation. It’s an unfortunate incident. We have to allow authorities to conduct their investigation until they feel it’s complete.”

Commuters expecting to take the BNSF line home to LaGrange, Western Springs, Hinsdale, Downers Grove and Naperville will be in for a wait.
Reile suggested that commuters stranded downtown take Union Pacific West Line out of the Ogilvie Transportation Center that ends in Elburn.
“That puts riders somewhat near their destination but they still need someone to pick them up,” Reile said.
Metra will continue to monitor the situation. At this point in time there are no arrangements for shuttle buses or other plans in place to pick up stranded riders.
