Seven Western Springs Students Awarded College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Seven Western Springs students have been awarded college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced more than 3,200 winners of scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities, according to a release.

The seven students from Western Springs who were awarded scholarships are:

• Ethan Mangerson, Lyons Township High School. Probable career field: mathematics. Mangerson was awarded the National Merit University of Minnesota Scholarship.
• Meghan McGarry, Nazareth Academy. Probable career field: neuroscience. McGarry was awarded the National Merit Vanderbilt University Scholarship.
• Timothy Mikulski, Lyons Township High School. Probable career field: physics. Mikulski was awarded the National Merit Carleton College Scholarship.
• Andrew Morrissey, Fenwick High School. Probable career field: computer science. Morrissey was awarded the National Merit University of Oklahoma Scholarship.
• Tegan Murrell, Lyons Township High School. Probable career field: mathematics. Murrell was awarded the National Merit University of Alabama Scholarship.
• Anna Podkowski, St. Ignatius College Preparatory School. Probable career field: international relations. Podkowski was awarded the National Merit University of Southern California Scholarship.
• Daniel Wennerstrum, Lyons Township High School. Probable career field: economics. Wennerstrum was awarded the National Merit Vanderbilt University Scholarship.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution, according to a release. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
