Sheriff's Office Collects 25,000 Cell Phones for Seniors

The Cook County Sheriff's Office has been collecting phones since 2006.

The Cell Phones for Seniors program has gathered more than 25,000 inactivated cell phones for seniors to use in case of emergency.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office has been collecting phones since 2006, according to a Cook County Sheriff’s Office news release. Donated phones go to the 911 Cell Phone Bank in Florida, where personal information is removed and the devices are distributed as inactivated phones that can call 911.

The sheriff’s office will continue to accept cell phone donations, and organizations are encouraged to hold cell phone drives, according to the news release.
