Spice Up Your Summer with New Activities

Summer is such a good time to try new things, meet new people and spend some time practicing cherished skills and hobbies.  If you have a little free time to spare, check out what’s coming up at the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs this week. 

Young Adult Supper Club:  The PCWS Supper Club is a young adult group for 21-30 year olds. We will be getting together one Monday night per month to try a new restaurant in the Chicagoland area.  This month we’re meeting on Monday, July 14, at 7:00pm at Taco Joint River North.  158 W. Ontario in Chicago.  Join us and bring your friends! 

Theology & Brew:  Our Theology & Brew group meets monthly for food, drinks and animated conversation about an interesting blog post, article or news story.  This month, we’ll be meeting on Monday, July 14, at 7:00pm at Now Serving in La Grange.  725 W. Hillgrove in La Grange, IL .  Join us for great discussion and a fun night with friends from PCWS and the community.  We’ll send out the topic to discuss in advance of the get-together each month.  Want to come?  Contact tandbrew@presbyws.org to be added to the mailing list for articles or to say you’ll be there!  We also host a daytime edition of Theology & Brew...stay tuned for next month's date and time.

Vacation Bible School:  VBS is here!  This is a summer favorite and we hope your kids will join us.  VBS runs July 14-18 from 9:00am-12:00 noon.  We’re discovering Jesus’ unconditional love at our “Weird Animals” themed VBS.  Science, team-building games, cool Bible songs, story telling, mission activities and tasty treats will be just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. 

This camp is available for children age 4 by September 2014 through kids who will be 6th graders in the Fall of 2014.  Cost is $25 per child with the option of a $7 music CD.  Visit http://tinyurl.com/vbs2014reg to register your children.

Knit & Crochet Group:  Do you love to knit or crochet?  Would you like to learn how?  Join us every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm in the Graham Charter Room at PCWS.  Bring a beverage (optional) and your project, or a skein of smooth, worsted weight yarn and a medium hook or size 11-13 needles and join us. It’s a very inter-generational and supportive group.  You are most welcome to attend!

Mini Golf with the JUPYs:  Do you know what a JUPY is?  That’s our youth group for 6th-8th graders.  They’re going out to play mini golf on Tuesday, July 15, at 7:00pm.  Meet at PCWS and bring $12.  Do you have middle school aged kids who would like to get involved in a youth group?  Our JUPYs participate in fun events and activities year-round and your children are welcome to join us!

Mission Trip:  Our UPYs (that’s our youth group for grades 9-12) are traveling to the Nez Perce Reservation on Sunday, July 20.  They will be staying in Lapwai, Idaho, to serve the local tribe and local community and working with the YouthWorks organization.  Throughout the week, our youth will help serve a kids program, do work projects, volunteer at a senior center, and help a food bank.  In addition to these service experiences, there will be evening activities that include worship, devotion time, New Perce tribe education, cookouts and whitewater rafting.  We’re excited for our youth and the Mission Trip Leaders as they embark on this week-long Mission Trip.

Sunday Worship:  You are always invited to join us for Sunday Worship at 9:30am.  This summer, we’re running a “Summer of Symbols” series, exploring why we have certain elements in worship and why they are important.  How can these symbols in our sanctuary become windows into a deeper encounter with the living God?  Join us in July as we explore Confession/pardon on July 13, Benediction on July 20 and Silence on July 27.  This has been a very interesting series and we hope you'll join us this summer.
