WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Some only children may oppose the idea of their parents having more kids. Sammy Spohn of Western Springs is just the opposite.

When the 8-year-old got the news that his mother, Maria Spohn, was pregnant, he responded with tears of joy.

In late April, Maria and her husband, Daniel Spohn, captured the moment on video when they told Sammy. They presented him with a shirt that read, "Leveled Up To Big Bro — Established 2021." That was meant to give him a hint.

But Sammy didn't get it right away, so his parents prodded him.

They asked him what he had been asking for and the meaning of "big bro."

"We're having a baby brother?" he asked.

"I don't know whether it's going to be a brother or a sister," his mom said.

Then came the realization.

He shouted out in joy, "We're having a baby! Oh my God, thank you so much. I'm so happy. Oh my God, I'm so excited."

He said he couldn't believe it.

"I'm actually going to have a baby brother. I love this. I really love this," he said.

The parents had always wanted another child, but Maria struggled to conceive because of medical complications. Maria found out she was pregnant the week before she was supposed to start fertility treatments.

The video has been posted online, with Maria telling Patch that it has gone viral.

"I knew he would be happy. He's been wishing for so long," she said in a message with the video. "He is still super excited and doesn't care if it's a boy or a girl."

Any chance of a video of Sammy and the baby?

"I will definitely be taking a video of their first meet," Maria told Patch.
