Veterans Day in Western Springs

While the banks and post office close on Veterans Day, the day means much more than that to most village residents.

Although Western Springs is generally regarded as a quiet, tranquil community, many of its residents have served in the military, some in the most violent of conflicts. In fact, according to the Harry G. Maxted VFW Post 10778, some 32 former residents have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country, as shown below:

In addition, countless others were wounded in combat, held as prisoners of war, and suffered psychological damage. Unfortunately, while our village always celebrates Memorial Day with a parade and speeches on the Tower Green, Veterans Day seems to have less significance.

Originally, the day was set aside to mark the end of hostilities in World War I, which concluded in 1918 “ …on the 11th hour of the eleventh day of the 11th month”. It was then known as Armistice Day.

In 1954, following the conclusion of World War II and the Korean conflict, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars. But, in 1968, the federal government began giving its employees a three day weekend by moving the day to a Monday. But, in 1978, public sentiment won out and the holiday was returned to November 11.

In Western Springs, veterans were invited to a free luncheon at the Senior Center in the Grand Avenue Community Center. And, a special Veterans Day ceremony was held at Forest Hills School. But, perhaps the best way to remember the day is to simply thank a veteran for his or her service. So, if you are reading this and happen to be a veteran, a big “Thank You!”.
