A Western Springs student is a candidate to advance to the semifinal round in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Bernadette Miao, a 14-year-old eighth grader at Saint John of the Cross Parish School, passed the second and third rounds of the bee by correctly spelling “paradox” and “nosography.“

Miao is speller No. 53, and she is sponsored by Commonwealth Edison. She enjoys arts and crafts, and she is an accomplished musician on both the piano and the clarinet, according to her speller profile. She loves hedgehog and Disney, and she hopes to pursue a career in medicine.

The announcement of semifinalists will be made after round three is complete.
