Western Springs Coronavirus: Lower Rate Than Many Suburbs

Dozen cases have been reported so far in Western Springs.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs has a dozen residents with confirmed cases of the coronavirus, a rate roughly in line with other wealthy suburbs, according to Cook County Health Department statistics. It has less than one case per thousand people. Meanwhile, the virus rate in the poorer south suburbs are several times the rate of Western Springs.

Neighboring La Grange has 27 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, with a rate of cases nearly double that of Western Springs.

As of Sunday, suburban Cook County reported 5,512 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 205 deaths. Eighty-five of those deaths were in nursing homes or other long-term casre facilities.

On Sunday, the state reported it had the lowest coronavirus death toll in six days. Gov. J.B. Pritzker said he was "cautiously optimistic" that the worst could be over as the number of deaths appeared to be leveling off.

As of Sunday afternoon, the state's coronavirus case count stood at 20,852, with 720 deaths attributable to COVID-19, according to the state Department of Public Health.
