Western Springs Police Veteran Sues Village

The former police sergeant claims he was fired because of medical conditions, reports say.

A former Western Springs police sergeant is suing the village over claims that his termination from the police department was the result of discrimination and retaliation, and the department failed to respond speedily to an accommodation request.

Mark Battista filed the federal lawsuit April 22, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The lawsuit states Battista’s doctor diagnosed him with several sleep-related disorders and advised him not to work past 11 p.m., the Tribune reported. Battista requested a shift that would end before 11 p.m., and his request was denied, the suit states.

Battista said in the suit he was fired because he was considered disabled.

He is asking for at least $500,000 on each of the three allegations against the Village of Western Springs and $100,000 in damages for each of two complaints of defamation.
