Western Springs Speller Competes In National Bee
John Nelson, speller No. 132, misspelled the word 'dioecious.'

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — A Western Springs 12-year-old and student at St. John of the Cross Parish School competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. John Nelson, speller No. 132, competed in the Bee on Tuesday.
However, Nelson spelled the word 'dioecious' incorrectly and is out of the competition.
According to the Bee, Nelson lists his favorite sports figure as Roger Federer, loves the TV show Blackish, and his favorite actor is Dwayne Johnson.

The preliminaries of the Bee are held Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Finals beginning on Thursday. Last year, Ananya Vinay of California, won the Bee by spelling 'marocain,' which is a type of dress fabric.
