Western Springs To Take Well Offline

Residents should not notice change in water quality, absent big main break or fire, village says.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs' Well No. 4 will go offline starting Jan. 13 for about four weeks, according to a village statement. Absent a major water main break or a significant fire, residents should not notice a difference in water quality as a result of the "proactive" maintenance, the village said.

At first, the village had planned to take Well No. 4 offline after Well No. 5 was brought online in late spring. But the village board decided it was better to bring No. 4 offline for maintenance earlier in the year, according to the statement. The village said several factors drove this decision: indications of reduced efficiency of Well No. 4's pump, increased wear and tear on the water plant's other equipment due to the decreased performance of Well No. 4 and the fact that water consumption is lowest in January and February.

To lessen the amount of time No. 4 is offline, the board approved the pre-purchase of key required equipment, the statement said. This will save three to four weeks in down time.
