Western Springs Virus Case Hikes Leveling

The latest weekly rate increase is half of what it was a couple of weeks ago, figures show.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs has seen a 13 percent increase in coronavirus cases in each of the last two weeks, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. Before that, the village experienced a weekly jump of 26 percent.

As of Sunday, the village had 550 coronavirus cases, up by 64 from a week before. The number of those who have recovered from the virus is unavailable.

The number of deaths stands at three, with the last one reported on Halloween. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 41.2 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 35.4 in La Grange Park, 39.6 in Darien, 41.7 in Hinsdale, 43.9 in Clarendon Hills, 46.9 in Elmhurst, 47.1 in DuPage County, 50.8 in Burr Ridge, 51.5 in suburban Cook County and 55.6 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 720,114, up 9.7 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 12,193 state residents.

Nationally, 13.1 million people have caught the virus, up 9.5 percent from the week before. A total of 265,166 people have died from the virus in the United States.
