Western Springs Virus Rate About Same: County

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Last week, Western Springs saw about the same number of new coronavirus cases as it has seen in the last few weeks, according to the Cook County Public Health Department.

As of Sunday, the village had experienced 1,472 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 23 new cases in the last week. The week before last, the village saw 22 new cases. For four weeks in June and July, the village's coronavirus case count did not budge.

The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at six. The latest deaths were reported May 31, May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 53 or older, according to the county medical examiner.

As of Sunday, Western Springs had 110 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 89 in Darien, 97 in La Grange Park, 100 in DuPage County and Hinsdale, 104 in Elmhurst, 109 in Clarendon Hills, 110 in suburban Cook County, 113 in Burr Ridge and 130 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,564,386, up 1.7 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 24,261.

Nationally, 40.9 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 2.6 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 656,318 people have died from the virus in the United States.
