WLTL joins forces with WCKG for Study Hall Radio

WLTL 88.1FM Radio at LT has long been one of America's best high school radio stations – now students are taking their talents to the level.

Beginning Saturday, April 4, students from WLTL, along with faculty adviser Chris Thomas, will begin producing a weekly news/talk program for WCKG-AM 1530. Study Hall Radio will air Saturdays at 2pm on AM 1530 and online at www.WCKG.com. The show, hosted by Thomas, will feature student reporters, interviewers and more.

“WLTL’s student broadcasters are generating the topics, researching and reporting the stories and conducting the interviews,” Thomas said. “I am just the person helping to put all of the pieces together and making connections for the listening audience as to why adults should care about what is on the minds of students today,” he added.

The idea for the program was developed with WCKG Operation Manager John Spataro, who is a WLTL alum and 2009 graduate of Lyons Township. “We wanted to find a way WCKG could give back and help current students, and what better way then to give the kids real world, commercial radio experience on AM 1530 while still in high school,” Spataro said.

The April 4 premiere episode will focus on driving and teenagers. Additional programs are planned to cover topics such as prom and dating, graduation and summer plans, jobs and activities for teenagers.

The purpose of each program will be to inform Suburban Chicago listeners of what is happening at the high school level, and how and why it affects our community. “As a father of four, this idea is a home run,” WCKG Owner/Station Manager Matt Dubiel said, “This is the kind of programming that makes local radio special!”

Spataro and Thomas hope to open up the Study Hall Radio to submissions from other local high school reporters and journalists from around DuPage County and Chicagoland.
