Broadview OKs Term Limits Referendum for Mayor, Clerk & Trustees
Mayor Thompson's proposal would limit the village president, the village clerk, and the six village trustees to four, four-year terms.

(Broadview, IL) – The Village of Broadview’s Board of Trustees on Monday approved submitting a referendum to voters that would seek to impose term limits on all elected village positions.
In a 4-1-1 vote, trustees approved at their regular board meeting the referendum initiative of Mayor Katrina Thompson that would limit the village president, the village clerk, and the six village trustees to four, four-year terms if approved by voters. Currently in Broadview, only the village president is term-limited.
Thompson cited both “equality under the law” and the need to prevent elected officials from “overstaying their welcome” for advancing her term limits proposal.

“By extending term limits to all elected offices in the Village of Broadview, rather than only the village president’s post, all offices will be treated equally and more justly under the law,” said Thompson. “Additionally, by applying a term limits ordinance to all offices, we would assure that no elected official ever becomes too entrenched in office and overstays their welcome.”
The referendum will appear on the June 28, 2022 primary election ballot. If approved, it will take effect on January 1, 2023 in time for the 2023 municipal elections.

“More power and more opportunity” for voters mayor says.
“Ultimately, Broadview voters gain more power and more opportunity over our community’s future by assuring fresh leadership at a fixed, certain point in time,” said Thompson. “Voters could, of course, vote out someone out of office ahead of their term limit, but, let’s face it, defeating incumbents is hard, and with term limits in place, political mobility is guaranteed to generate new leaders and new ideas in the future.”
