Broadview's Christmas Gift: $300,00 to Fight Storm Water Collection

(Broadview, IL) – With just six days before Christmas, the Village of Broadview learned that it would receive a $300,000 grant to alleviate storm water collection in village hall’s principal parking lot.

Broadview Public Works Director Matt Ames provided the surprise announcement to the Board of Trustees during its regular board meeting on Monday evening, which drew a burst of applause from trustees and members of the audience.

“We applied to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District six months ago for the grant, and learned today that we would receive $300,000 to alleviate storm water collection in the village parking lot,” said Ames. “The $300,000 should cover about two-thirds of the cost of the project.”

Mayor Katrina Thompson, who noted that Broadview had sought $362,000 from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, said the project aligns with the village’s broader green infrastructure strategy to fight climate change.

“We work hard in the environmental space and seek to invest in green infrastructure projects to reduce the expensive and harmful consequences of climate change in Broadview, and fighting storming collection is part of our strategy,” said Thompson. “In addition to alleviating storm water collection, we are also investing in solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations so that Broadview can be a 21st Century community and draw new businesses and residents to the community.”

Ames explained that the project would allow the storm water to be absorbed into the ground of the park lot rather than running off and flooding surrounding property or collecting in the lot.

The village expects the project to begin in the Summer/Fall 2023.
