Driver In Custody After Car Plows Into Pedestrians On Expressway

Police found the car, which left without part of its bumper, abandoned a few blocks away.

CHICAGO, IL — One person is dead and four others were hurt when a car plowed into five pedestrians who were standing on an exit ramp of the Eisenhower Expressway on Chicago's West Side, state troopers said. Illinois State Police have said the driver, a woman, is in custody, but have not released her name.

The pedestrians had been standing on the Homan Avenue ramp of Interstate 290 after their taxi broke down, troopers said. Around 4:45 a.m. Sunday, a car barreled into the group in the Fifth City neighborhood and then sped off.

One person died at the scene. Four people were hospitalized with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Anan Ahmed H. Albalawi, 27, of Morehead, Kentucky, was identified as the victim, ABC7 reported.
