Chicago Man Pleads Guilty To Illegally Selling Handguns, Rifles

The man illegally sold more than a dozen guns on the city's West Side, authorities said.

CHICAGO — A 31-year-old man from Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood has pleaded guilty to federal gun charges for illegally selling more than a dozen handguns and rifles, according to a statement issued Wednesday by the Northern District of Illinois U.S. Attorney's Office. Jymil Campbell was arrested in 2016 after he sold ten handguns, four large-capacity magazines and three rifles over a nine-month period, the attorney's office said.

Most of the sales happened in Campbell’s home in North Lawndale, authorities said. He received $8,700 in cash for the guns from buyers who turned out to be confidential informants, according to the statement.

Campbell had previously been convicted of two felonies – home invasion and armed robbery – and he didn't have a federal firearms license, authorities said.

According to the plea agreement, one of the buyers indicated to Campbell that the guns would be used in illegal gun violence, and Campbell nonetheless went through with the sale. Campbell also admitted telling the buyer that a firearm was essentially “brand new” and had not yet been “shot shot, like in a war.”

Campbell pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of willfully dealing firearms without a license and one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The convictions carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
