At Least 11 Hospitalized After Gas Leak At S. Ashland Facility

Chicago Fire officials reported responding to a carbon dioxide leak at Lower West Side meatpacking plant.

CHICAGO, IL — At least 11 people were taken to hospitals after a hazardous gas leak Monday morning at a meatpacking plant on the Lower West Side. Chicago Fire Department officials said crews were called just after 11:30 a.m. to the Battaglia Foodservice Distributors facility at 2500 S. Ashland Avenue for reports of elevated carbon dioxide levels and carbon monoxide in the area, Sun-Times reported.

Paramedics checked several people at the scene and the fire department reported crews used fans to ventilate the building, which was secured around 12:30 p.m.
