Man Charged In 'Brutal' Head Stomp On West Side: Cops

The victim remains in critical condition, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — A man has been charged in what police called a "vicious" attack on a victim on Chicago's West Side. The attack happened Monday around 1:10 a.m. in the 1200 block of South Independence Blvd. in North Lawndale, police said.

Dontae Decatur, 21, of the 5000 block of West Jackson, was charged with attempted first degree murder, police said.

Decatur robbed and beat a 42-year-old man, according to police. Decatur then stomped on the victim's head as he lay on the ground and stole the victim's vehicle, police said.

Officers identified Decatur as the offender in the beating around 10 minutes after the attack in the 1200 block of South Avers, police said. Decatur then resisted, threatened and spat on officers as they placed him in custody, according to police.

Decatur was charged with attempted first degree murder, police said. He was also charged with one felony count of vehicular hijacking with a firearm, two misdemeanor counts of resisting and obstructing a peace officer and a misdemeanor count of assault. Decatur has prior weapons and narcotics convictions, police said.

Decatur was scheduled to appear in bond court Wednesday, police said.
