Man Shot By Officers On West Side: Police

The man was holding a gun when he was shot in the Austin neighborhood, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — A man is in critical condition after he was shot by police on the West Side Saturday morning. Police said the man pointed a gun at officers in the Austin neighborhood.

Officers were responding to a Shotspotter technology alert that notified them of shots fired in the 5200-block of West Ohio just before 3 a.m., police said.

When the officers arrived, they tried to ask two men sitting on a porch about the shots fired, and one of the men took off running, police said.

He ran down an alley and fell, according to police. He then took a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers, and they fired at him, police said.

The man is in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

The two officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, pending the investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
