Ride-Share Driver Shoots At Carjackers On NW Side

The driver had a concealed-carry license, and fired shots at two carjackers, police said.

CHICAGO, IL — A ride-share driver fired shots at two carjackers in the Belmont Heights neighborhood on the Northwest Side Thursday night, police said. The 23-year-old driver picked up two passengers in the 7400 block of West Belmont Avenue around 11:15 p.m., according to police. The passengers then attacked the driver and tried to take his vehicle, police said.

The driver, who had a concealed-carry license, pulled out a handgun and chased the offenders after they got out of the vehicle, police said. The driver fired shots at the carjackers but neither was hit, according to police.

While the driver chased the suspects, one of them got back into the victim's car and drove off, police said. The victim grabbed onto his vehicle and was dragged a short distance before letting go, and the carjacker took off, according to police.

The ride-share driver was taken to Community First Hospital and listed in good condition.

Police found his vehicle abandoned soon after, and Area North detectives were investigating.
