Safe Passage Worker Shot On West Side

The worker was seriously wounded in the Austin neighborhood, police said.

CHICAGO — A Safe Passage worker was shot on the West Side Thursday morning, police said. The worker was seriously wounded in a shootout between two suspects in the Austin neighborhood, according to police.

The victim, thought to be in his 20s, was shot in the back around 8:20 a.m. in the 5600 block of West Corcoran Place, police said.

He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, authorities said.

The victim was shot several blocks away from Edward K. Ellington Elementary School at 243 N. Parkside Ave.

Chicago Public School's Safe Passage program was created to provide safe routes for students traveling to and from school.
