Steven Rosenthal's Family Calls Bodycam Video 'Inconclusive'

Police said the teen killed himself, and showed his family a police bodycam video. But the family said they are 'unconvinced.'

CHICAGO — Police showed a bodycam video to the family of 16-year-old Steven Rosenthal, who died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Police said the teen shot himself at his home in Lawndale after a chase Friday night, but his family said the bodycam video is "inconclusive." The family met with Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson Monday afternoon to see the footage.

The family said they plan to conduct an independent investigation, and will work with the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.

Police said the teen shot himself at his home in the in the 1500 block of South Keeler Avenue after the police chase, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

A vigil was held Saturday night for Rosenthal, and on Sunday, his family and community members held a march to demand that his body be released to his family.

Police said that the bodycam video shows that no officer fired a gun during the chase with the teen.

The Chicago Office of Police Accountability, as per department policy, plans to release the video within 60 days.

Rosenthal's aunt set up a Gofundme page in her nephew's name.

"Please help our family get justice! Help us lay our baby to rest," the page read.
