Woman Killed, 2 Injured In South Austin Fire

Firefighters fought a massive, deadly fire on Chicago's West Side early Friday.

CHICAGO, IL — A woman was killed and two people were injured in a fire on the city's West Side Friday. The fire started just before 3 a.m. in the 5200 block of West Chicago Avenue, fire officials said. The blaze broke out on the first floor of an apartment building in the South Austin neighborhood.

The woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead, Chicago Fire Media Affairs said. A man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, authorities said. According to several reports, the man may be the woman's husband.

A firefighter was treated for a minor injury, according to fire officials.

At least 11 people were displaced by the fire, authorities said. A cat was rescued from the apartment and another cat is missing.

According to several reports, there were no working smoke detectors in the building. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
