Wheaton North, 2 Wheaton Elementary Schools Among Best Schools in DuPage County: Magazine

Chicago magazine this past week released its list rating the top schools in Chicago and the suburbs.

WHEATON, IL - Three Wheaton schools were named to Chicago magazine's list of the best schools in DuPage County, which was released this week.

Wheaton North High School made Chicago magazine’s list as the No. 2 best high school in DuPage County while Longfellow Elementary School was ranked No. 2 and Hawthorne Elementary School was ranked at No. 7 among the best elementary schools in the county.

In DuPage County, Meadow Glens Elementary School in Naperville earned the No. 1 ranking among elementaries, and Lisle High School took the top spot in its category.

Teaming up with nonprofit group RTI International,Chicago magazine created the criteria for its best of lists—divided by county and school level—based on test scores, attendance, spending per student, graduation rates (for the high schools) and other data taken from the Illinois Board of Education. The publication hasn't done this type of school analysis and ranking since 2012.

Here's a quick breakdown of the numbers that helped these schools earn their rankings:

Wheaton North High School (No. 2)

  • Spending per student: $7,740
  • Number of freshman meeting or exceeding benchmarks for ninth grade: 92 percent
  • Graduation rate: 91 percent
  • Percentage of students scoring above a 21 on ACT: 72 percent

Longfellow Elementary School (No. 2)

  • Spending per student: $7,740
  • Students meeting or exceeding state PARCC exam standards: 77 percent
  • Average daily attendance: 96 percent

Hawthorne Elementary School (No. 7)

  • Spending per student: $7,740
  • Students meeting or exceeding state PARCC exam standards: 58 percent
  • Average daily attendance: 96 percent
