$50,000 Bail Set for Woman Charged With Hate Crime in DuPage County

The woman is accused of pointing a weapon and yelling racial slurs at three children who walked past her home Monday.

A 49-year-old Roselle woman is being held on $50,000 bail after being charged Tuesday for pointing a weapon and yelling racial slurs at three children as they walked past her home Monday night, prosecutors said.

Karen Komar, of 205W550 Webster in unincorporated Roselle, was charged with three counts of a hate crime and three counts of aggravated assault, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office press release.

Komar is accused of walking out of her home at about 8:50 p.m. on Monday armed with a high-powered air rifle and pointing the weapon at three youths who were walking in front of her home.

She threatened them and screamed racial slurs, according to the news release.

The youths ran back to their homes where one of them informed their mother who immediately contacted the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Following an investigation, Komar was arrested later that night.

“The charges against Ms. Komar are extremely serious,” said DuPage County State‘s Attorney Robert Berlin. “Hate crimes and the accompanying prejudice have no place in our society and will be met with the full force of the law.“

Komar’s is next expected in court on July 20.
