Man Charged In Violent Beating Near West Chicago Metra Station

WEST CHICAGO, IL — A man faces felony charges after police say he violently beat another man near the Metra train station in West Chicago.

Steven Davis, 43, was charged with aggravated battery in a public place and aggravated battery — great bodily harm in connection with the July 19 attack.

Police were called to the area around 8:40 p.m. for a report of a disturbance on a footpath near the Wilson Avenue underpass. Responding officers reported that they saw Davis at the scene with blood on his clothes and hands.

Officers also reported seeing another man who appeared to be unconscious, on the rocks in the underpass.

According to a news release from DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, "The man was severely beaten with blood on his face, his eyes shut and his back covered in scratch marks."

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was determined to have broken vertebrae, broken ribs and black eyes.

Prosecutors say an investigation led police to discover that Davis encountered the man and began beating him, then kicking him as he lay on the ground facedown. Davis is also accused of kicking rocks at the man.

"Public safety is the cornerstone of my administration, and my office remains steadfast in our commitment to holding violent offenders accountable for their actions,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “Today’s charges against Mr. Davis are very serious and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. While the injuries sustained by the victim in this case are quite severe, it is my sincerest hope that he will make a full and speedy recovery."

Davis is being held at DuPage County Jail, with a court date scheduled for Aug. 17.
