Rescheduled Public Hearing Set For Sept. 9 For Revised College Church Parking Lot Proposal

The public hearing had been rescheduled to allow sufficient time for public notice amid a revised proposal.

| Updated

WHEATON, IL — A public hearing for revised proposal from College Church for a special use permit to build a parking lot on the northeast corner of Seminary Avenue and Scott Street will be held on Sept. 9. The hearing was initially scheduled for Aug. 11, but was postponed to allow sufficient time for public notice.

During the September public hearing, members of the Wheaton Planning and Zoning Commission will review revisions made by College Church after pushback from nearby residents at a public hearing in June.

College Church initially proposed a 70-space parking lot for the site. Their request has since been updated to call for 53 parking spaces.

Per the proposal, 27 of those spaces will now be dedicated for limited mobility and five spaces will be ADA accessible, city documents show.

The proposed site of the lot is currently zoned as an R4 residential district. The petitioners are requesting it be rezoned to I-1 for institutional usage

Petitioners are additionally requesting a zoning variation to shorten the lot's pavement setbacks from 15 feet to five feet.

A single-family home and multi-unit buildings that formerly occupied the site were demolished in spring.

Neighboring residents, including many in the nearby Union Corridor neighborhood have contended that the rezoning is inappropriate and the parking lot will negatively impact property values.

The public hearing will be held Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at Wheaton City Hall.
