WEST CHICAGO, IL — A former Warrenville man has been found guilty in the 2001 sexual assault of a woman in West Chicago. Alberto Gomez, 54, was convicted on three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, four counts of criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

A sample of Gomez's DNA was taken in 2022 when was detained while attempting to return to the United States illegally, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Gomez's DNA matched DNA from the November 25, 2021, sexual assault in West Chicago in which a woman awoke to find him in her bedroom around 4:20 a.m. Gomez hit her in the head, face and stomach before sexually assaulting her, according to prosecutors.

Gomez appeared in court in July 2023, when his bond was set at $5 million. He has been held at DuPage County Jail since then.

"The identification, prosecution and guilty verdict of a man suspected in a violent sexual assault that occurred nearly twenty-five years ago sends a strong message that in DuPage County you cannot outlast the law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

Berlin added, "We will never give up on a case or a victim, no matter how much time has passed. I commend the West Chicago Police Department for their efforts and commitment to justice that allowed us to charge Mr. Gomez."

Gomez will appear in court again on Nov. 5.
