WHEATON, IL — Why does it seem inevitable that there'll be a strand of lights that doesn't work as you're decorating for the holidays? Wheaton's 2026 Holiday Lights Recycling initiative offers a way to get rid of those duds without relegating them to a landfill.

Wheaton Public Works Storage Facility will accept strands of incandescent and LED holiday lights for recycling through Jan. 30.

Residents can drop off their lights at 820 W. Liberty Dr. on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Signs are posted to help you navigate to the recycling area, which is located through the storage facility's gate. To allow for easier recycling, lights must not be in a box or bag.

Ornaments, lighted garland and wreaths, lighted lawn decorations and similar items will not be accepted.

Schools, businesses and other organizations can also recycle their lights. There is no limit to the amount of lights that can be recycled.
