The Marion E. Wade Center, Old English Reading Group, English Department and Tolkien Society at Wheaton College present&nbsp;"Under a Northern Sky: Early Medieval Influences on Tolkien’s&nbsp;The Children of Húrin,"&nbsp;a lecture by Benjamin Weber, Ph.D. on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 4:00 PM. The story of Túrin Turambar is perhaps the most haunting and tragic of the tales that lie behind the world of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien himself remarked that the story was influenced by the Finnish Kalevala, but there are clear parallels with the Old Icelandic and Old English legends of Sigurd the Dragonslayer as well. This lecture will consider the ways in which Tolkien was inspired by different stories from what he calls the “nameless North," suggesting that the legends of Sigurd and the Volsungs can deepen our appreciation of the tale of Túrin and tell us something about Tolkien as a reader of early medieval literature. Dr. Benjamin Weber&nbsp;is Associate Professor of English and Classical Languages (by courtesy) at Wheaton College, where he teaches numerous courses on medieval literature and its Classical antecedents. A specialist in Old English literature, he has written numerous interpretive essays on the Old English poetic corpus and is currently working on a book entitled&nbsp;Woven in Words: Poetics and Poetry Translation in Pre-Conquest England, under contract with Manchester University Press. He has a long-standing interest in Tolkien as a reader and commentator on medieval literature, expressed most obviously in prior lectures at the Wade Center on Tolkien’s translations of&nbsp;Beowulf&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Battle of Maldon.
This event is cosponsored by the Marion E. Wade Center, Old English Reading Group, English Department, and Tolkien Society at Wheaton College.
This event is free and open to the public and will take place in Marion E. Wade Center, Bakke Auditorium, located at 351 East Lincoln Avenue in Wheaton on the Northwest corner of campus at the intersection of Washington Street and Lincoln Avenue. Under a Northern Sky: Early Medieval Influences on Tolkien’s The Children of Húrin

The Physics and Engineering Department &nbsp;at Wheaton College presents "From Physics &amp; Metaphysics to Magic &amp; Religion in the Greco-Roman World: &nbsp;Historical Thought Impact on Current Thinking," a lecture by Dr. Ori Z Soltes on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 7:00 PM.
This talk explores the interesting wrestling match with certain important words and their underlying concepts, from how the ancient Greeks distinguished physics from metaphysics from ethics and sophistry from philosophy to how the Romans distinguished philosophy and medicine and science from magic, and superstition from religion. How did these terms evolve to convey which underlying concepts? What were the implications for everyday people’s lives? And then: how did all this help shape the sweep of Western history between antiquity and the modern era? And how did what they meant lead to what we mean—or think we mean—when we use these terms? And what are the implications for our own future—of how we relate a past more complicated than they teach us in Sunday School to the present?
The McIntyre Lecture series exists to promote understanding of the purposes and limits of science by examining historical and philosophical influences. &nbsp;
Dr. Ori Z Soltes teaches at Georgetown University across the disciplines of art theology, philosophy, art history, and political history. He has authored or edited 32 books and several hundred articles and exhibition catalogue essays, including, recently, "Eros and Eris: Love and Strife in and beyond Greco-Roman World" and "The Problem of God and How Humans Have Tried to Solve It Across History." &nbsp;

Arena Theater at Wheaton College presents Well at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16 to Saturday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 23 to Saturday, April 25.
“Why are some people sick and other people well? And why do some sick people get better?” A plucky young woman, clutching her notecards, sets out to address these questions. The results are at once graceful and awkward, elegant and confusing, heartbreaking and hilarious. Just like life.
This production is directed by Mark Lewis.
In addition to the evening shows, a matinee show will be offered at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. The theater is located in Jenks Hall at 433 North Howard Street in Wheaton.
