Marion E. Wade Center

The Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College presents "Bookending C.S. Lewis: On F.P. Wilson, his Oxford Tutor, and J.A.W. Bennett, his Cambridge Successor," a lecture by Rev. Dr. Joel D. Heck, on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 7:00 PM.
This presentation surveys the life and influence of two people whose lives intersected in significant ways with C.S. Lewis, both at Oxford and at Cambridge. Wilson, Lewis's tutor, was the General Editor of the Oxford History of English Literature for which Lewis wrote the volume on the sixteenth century, and Bennett succeeded Lewis at Cambridge as the man who held the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English. Bennett's inaugural lecture gave tribute to Lewis.
Since July 1, 2022, Rev. Dr. Joel D. Heck is retired from pastoral ministry after fifty years in ministry. He has been pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Valley Park, Missouri; Professor at Concordia University Wisconsin; Chief Academic Officer and Professor at Concordia University Texas; and most recently as President of Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He holds the Doctor of Theology from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He is the author of more than 120 articles, more than forty of them on C. S. Lewis, and the author or editor of sixteen books, most recently&nbsp;No Ordinary People: Twenty-One Friendships of C. S. Lewis&nbsp;(Winged Lion Press, 2021) and&nbsp;The Lion That Roared&nbsp;(Lulu.com, 2023), a children’s story that he co-authored with his daughter Brenda, who lives in Cincinnati. Besides their daughter Brenda, he and his wife Cheryl have two grown sons and four grandchildren.
This event is free and open to the public and will take place in Marion E. Wade Center, Room 130 Bakke Auditorium, located at 351 East Lincoln Avenue in Wheaton on the Northwest corner of campus at the intersection of Washington Street and Lincoln Avenue. After the initial welcome, guests will walk through the Billy Graham Museum, which will be divided by global regions, to interact with the scholars. Brief comments by College administration with refreshments will follow. This event is free and open to the public. There is no RSVP or registration required.

Wheaton College's Arena Theater and the Wheaton Park District present Romeo and Juliet, the production of Shakespeare in the Park, at 7 p.m. with a puppet show starting at 6:45 p.m. from Thursday, August 27 to Saturday, August 29.
Experience another of the world’s greatest playwright’s works at Memorial Park Bandshell. Shakespeare in the Park is a high-quality annual theater event presented free of charge to the public by the Wheaton Park District and Wheaton College’s Arena Theater.

Families, family dogs and pet lovers from all over Chicagoland can enjoy great, affordable, family-friendly entertainment and the thrill of world-class canine competition at the upcoming Great American Dog Show(GADS). The Show will be held September 5-6, 2026, at The Cantigny Park (1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton).
The Show will be chalk full of premier show dogs and competitors from the 200 American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized breeds. The spirit of competition will come alive as America’s favorite animals compete for top prizes throughout the weekend.
Along with the competition, which will take place across multiple large rings, the event will showcase demonstrations of agility, scent work, trick dog, and more. A highlight of the shows will be a Greet the Breeds event showcasing lots of unique and recognized breeds. The two-day experience will include multiple vendors, sponsors and exhibitors providing area dog lovers with insights into the best new products and services to support the health, grooming, training, and wellbeing of their favorite furry friends. Other highlights and activities over the weekend include:
Dachshund Races – hot diggity dog! watch (and/or bring your own) oodles of the cutest Dachshunds race for top dog bragging rights 
BYOD - Bring Your Own Dog Fun Run – join in the fun and watch your own (well-mannered and vaccinated) dog compete in a lively, outdoor, exciting event for all
Informative Meet Ups with the Experts -Trainers, Groomers and Vets on hand to consult and answer all your burning questions about your furry family members. Educational programming throughout the weekend to learn about the latest information about how to care for, feed, train and understand your pet. 
Competitive Pee Wee Show– kids ages 5 to 9 can practice and learn about being a junior handler.

Twenty-five years after the attacks of September 11th, Invisible Wounds Foundation marks that anniversary with our 2026 Evening of Honor, featuring special guest Martha Raddatz, ABC News Chief Global Affairs Correspondent and co-anchor of This Week, and author of the New York Times bestseller The Hero Next Door, recognizing the courage, patriotism, and commitment of those who have served our country.
Raddatz will interview Dr. Rocco Armonda, an internationally renowned neurosurgeon, retired US Army colonel, and member of IWF's Medical Scientific Advisory Council, whose work is also featured in The Hero Next Door. They'll discuss his experience treating military and civilian victims of traumatic brain injury in Ukraine and other conflicts. Emmy-winning ABC 7 Chicago anchor Mark Rivera, who has interviewed Raddatz on air, serves as our master of ceremonies.
The evening begins with a 5:00pm cocktail reception at the Morton Arboretum's open-air Firefly Pavilion, followed by dinner and program at 6:30. We'll share inspiring stories of patriotism and purpose, and the critical work Invisible Wounds Foundation is pursuing to help our nation's warfighters address the invisible wounds of war. Every guest will receive a signed copy of Raddatz's book, The Hero Next Door.

St. Sophia's Forgotten Felines

he cats we care for at St. Sophia’s come from many different places. The majority of the cats we help are those that are helpless, who have not experienced love or a home, stray, abused, and neglected cats. Primarily we work with high-volume/high-kill animal controls to save cats from needless euthanasia. Our largest partner is Chicago Animal Care and Control. Other ACs we partner with are Aurora, Joliet Township, DuPage, Herrin, Marion, Quincy, Tilton, Union, Jasper, and Whiting. St. Sophia’s also works with local Trap-Neuter-Return organizations. Trap-Neuter-Return (also known as TNR) is a method of humanely trapping unaltered feral cats, neutering them, and releasing them back to the same environment where they were originally found. TNR is promoted by proponents as a humane and more effective alternative for managing and reducing feral cat populations (compared to euthanasia). While most cats trapped are completely feral (wild, without any domestic socialization), some cats—often kittens, or even adults that have been well cared-for outdoors—can, and have, become socialized and adoptable. TNR organizations aren’t equipped to handle the “friendlies” that come in, so we step in to assist those cats looking for homes. Lastly, some of our cats are direct owner surrenders. Sometimes circumstances have it that people are unable to care for their cats due to moving, eviction, financial issues, death, allergies, etc. We accept these cats in when we have space and maintain a waiting list of those who need assistance.
