Citizens Fire Academy In Wheaton Now Accepting Applications
Residents can learn how Wheaton firefighters do their jobs via an eight-week immersive course. The deadline to sign up is Aug. 30.
WHEATON, IL — If you've ever wondered how a Wheaton firefighter gets their job done, now is your chance to theoretically step into their boots. The Wheaton Fire Department recently opened applications for its 2023 Citizens Fire Academy.
The free eight-week program immerses participants in the fire department's daily operations. Those who attend will learn how firefighters use breathing apparatuses, perform vehicle extrications and do other crucial activities.
The class comes to a close with participants helping put out a controlled fire at a burn tower in Carol Stream.

Residents must meet the following criteria to be eligible:
- Be a resident of Wheaton
- Be at least 18 years of age
The deadline to apply is Aug. 30 and the program runs Sept. 6 through Oct. 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
